The new Elizabeth line underground service will begin operating trains between Heathrow airport and central London from 6 November.
The long-awaited line, also known as Crossrail, partially opened in May and will be extended in November to Heathrow, as well as Reading in Berkshire and Shenfield in Essex. The new Bond Street station in London’s West End is also set to open by November.
The move means that passengers arriving at Heathrow will be able to take the Elizabeth line through the centre of London to key business areas such as Canary Wharf without having to change at Paddington.
Ross Baker, Heathrow’s chief commercial officer, said: “This is a huge step in boosting rail connections to the UK's hub airport directly linking Canary Wharf with Heathrow by rail for the first time.
“This gives our passengers and colleagues more choices to travel sustainably between Heathrow and London. I am delighted Heathrow will continue to be at the heart of a growing integrated transport network and our passengers and colleagues will reap the benefits.”
Weekday travel times on the line from Heathrow will be 40 minutes to Farringdon and 51 minutes to Canary Wharf. Journeys will be slightly shorter at weekends.
The Elizabeth line will also start services on Sundays for the first time on 6 November. While the number of train services operating on the line will be increased through central London between Paddington and Whitechapel.
Andy Byford, London's transport commissioner, added: “I am excited to see the Elizabeth line unlock quicker and better journey options, greater accessibility, and further connectivity to jobs and leisure for even more people.
“This will be another giant leap for London's public transport system, which supports economic growth in the capital and right across the country.”
