Lufthansa is testing a service enabling passengers to offset CO2 emissions whilst on board via the inflight entertainment system (IFE).
The service is currently available on short and medium-haul flights with internet connectivity to and from Munich.
Lufthansa Group-owned SWISS will also offer the service on selected long-haul flights.
Passengers are offered the service on the IFE system and can choose how they’d like to offset their emissions.
Options include sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or high-quality carbon offset projects via myclimate, or a combination of both.
The onboard entertainment application also enables passengers to see how many other passengers have offset emissions for the same flight.
The technology behind the service is from the Compensaid platform which was developed by Lufthansa Innovation Hub.
Lufthansa Group aims to cut its emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 and wants to be carbon neutral by 2050.
