Airline Swiss is deepening its partnership with SBB Swiss Federal Railways by offering a new international air-rail connection between Zurich airport and Munich’s central station.
The intermodal service, which will be rebranded as Swiss Air Rail, will begin in July 2022 and features a new train service running between Munich Hauptbahnhof rail station and Zurich airport, which takes three hours and 20 minutes, with a further expansion of air-rail options in Switzerland also planned for this summer.
The two transport companies already offer air-rail services within Switzerland between Zurich airport and SBB’s rail stations in Basel, Lugano and Geneva under the Airtrain name.
Tamur Goudarzi Pour, chief commercial officer at Swiss, said: “Together with the SBB, we’re taking a big further step forward in offering our customers complementary travel options.
“We are jointly seeking to provide smarter combinations of rail and air transport wherever these make sense, and we’re marking a particular milestone here in offering our first-ever international Swiss Air Rail connection with Munich.”
From 1 July, Swiss passengers will be able to use the new rail services between Zurich airport and Munich with six SBB trains per day in both directions. The rail ticket will be included within the Swiss airfare.
Veronique Stephan, SBB’s head of passenger services markets, added: “This new service will enable Swiss customers living a short or a medium distance away from Swiss’s Zurich hub to make greater use of rail connections to get to and from the airport.”
