American Airlines has become only the second global airline to be named in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World).
The US-based carrier joins Japan’s ANA Group in the ESG-based global index, which measures major companies based on a range of long-term economic, environmental and social criteria.
The global sustainability index, which was launched in 1999, represents the top 10 per cent of the largest 2,500 companies from the S&P Global Broad Market Index. They are identified through Dow Jones’ Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) which measures firms’ performance on key ESG metrics.
American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said: “Inclusion on the DJSI World recognises our work to improve the reliability of our operation, invest in our team members and operate more sustainably. We are honoured to be recognised for our progress.”
The airline highlighted achievements such as its on-time departure performance this year, high satisfaction scores in customer surveys, a new four-year deal with pilots, as well as setting a 2035 carbon intensity target and investments in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and carbon removal projects.
