Traffic in February at Germany’s main hub airport, Frankfurt, increased by 12.9 per cent year-on-year to 3.9 million travellers, despite a series of strikes that grounded Lufthansa flights throughout the month.
Major disruption to services by the German flag carrier resulted in the cancellation of about 1,770 flights from Frankfurt last month, affecting some 225,000 travellers.
Airport operator Fraport said the disruption was “partially offset” by additional traffic on this year’s leap day (29 February), resulting in year-on-year passenger growth of close to 13 per cent. However, volumes remain 15 per cent below 2029 levels.
Most of the airports in Fraport’s international portfolio also recorded increases in demand in February, including Slovenia’s Ljubljana Airport, which saw a 32.8 per cent increase in passengers to 86,181, while its 14 regional Greek airports welcomed a total of 636,866 passengers, representing an increase of 13.9 per cent.
