Global air search volumes in the first four months of 2022 reached almost 2019 levels according to data from Amadeus.
The global distribution company (GDS) said that search volumes in the final week of April were down 3 per cent compared to the same week in 2019.
A number of markets reported double digit increases across the whole of April according to the data with Canada up 29 per cent while the US was up 7 per cent.
Searches for domestic routes demonstrate the faster recovery in that segment with a 4 per cent increase at the end of April compared to the same period in 2019. However, other segments are also growing in terms of search volumes with intra-regional searches only down 4 per cent compared to 2019 levels in the final week of April.
The UK and France recorded gains of 35 per cent and 38 per cent respectively.
Debbie Keller, senior vice president, data and API ecosystems, Amadeus said: “It is incredibly encouraging to see such a strong appetite for travel around the world. Air travel search queries are one of the important data sets we study to learn about traveller sentiment and how markets are responding to quickly changing circumstances.”
The data also provides insight on city pairs with nine of the 16 most popular routes recording search volumes up on 2019 levels. Delhi-Toronto was up 32 per cent, Tel Aviv-New York was up 90 per cent and Buenos Aires-Madrid was up 49 per cent.
Earlier this month, figures from aviation data specialist OAG revealed air capacity had returned to 83 per cent of pre-Covid seats.
