Sustainable aviation fuel supplier Neste has created a new platform for organisations to help reduce their emissions from business travel.
The Finland-based company has unveiled Neste Impact which allows corporates to buy SAF from Neste through a book-and-claim system.
Neste Impact allows organisations to set their own sustainability targets and use a calculator to work out how much SAF they need to buy to achieve these goals.
Once a corporate has purchased the required amount of SAF, Neste will ensure the fuel is supplied to one of the airlines it partners with. This transaction is then “verifiably used to replace fossil fuel”.
“After the SAF has been used, the business receives a third-party verified report, enabling it to credibly report the achieved emissions savings contributing to their sustainability targets,” explained Neste in a statement.
Book-and-claim is becoming a more widely used way for corporates to reduce their emissions through buying SAF and being able to claim its use towards achieving the organisation’s sustainability targets. SAF can reduce emissions by up to 80 per cent over the lifecycle of the fuel compared with traditional kerosene-based fuel.
Travel management firm American Express GBT partnered with Shell Aviation and Accenture to launch its own Avelia book-and-claim system in 2022. Corporates including Aon, Bank of America and Google have signed up to use this platform.
Kristina Öström, vice president of marketing, brand and partnerships at Neste, said: “The urgency for climate action has never been greater and businesses are increasingly looking for solutions that help them to reduce their aviation related carbon footprint.
“It can be a challenge to find a credible solution, particularly considering the ever-increasing reporting requirements and public demand for transparency. Neste Impact provides an easy-to-use solution for verified emission reductions, provided by the world’s leading producer of SAF.”
Neste added that the Impact platform was “aligned with the aviation guidance” of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company said that it would ensure that the SAF purchased by corporates would be delivered and “used specifically” for flights.
Last week, travel management company ATPI said it was poised to sign a deal enabling clients to purchase SAF from Neste.
