The UK’s Insolvency Service has started criminal and civil investigations into P&O Ferries’ sacking of 800 workers earlier this month.
The ferry operator suddenly fired 800 seafaring crew on 17 March provoking a storm of protest among politicians and unions.
The Insolvency Service announced on Friday (1 April) that it would be formally investigating the actions of P&O Ferries.
“Following its enquiries, the Insolvency Service has commenced formal criminal and civil investigations into the circumstances surrounding the recent redundancies made by P&O Ferries,” said the service in a statement.
“As these are ongoing investigations, no further comment or information can be provided at this time.”
Transport secretary Grant Shapps said on Twitter: “The Insolvency Service has reviewed P&O Ferries’ actions and placed it under criminal investigation for its actions.
“[P&O Ferries chief executive] Peter Hebblethwaite stood before MPs and admitted to breaking the law, and his actions must now be scrutinised.”
