Travel tech platform Spotnana has today announced the release of Spotnana Carbon Removal, which helps travel managers record the removal of carbon emissions in their air travel programmes.
Through Spotnana Carbon Removal, companies can assess their travel programmme’s carbon emissions data and then have those emissions removed from the atmosphere permanently.
Spotnana has partnered with Creturner Group, which uses a Bio Carbon Capture and Storage (Bio-CCS) process to convert wood-based waste products into coal that is deposited into old, end-of-life mining pits. Spontana explains it as a process similar to a reverse coal mine – putting carbon away rather than taking it out.
There are many different ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, but climate thought leaders agree carbon reduction will only take us so far to achieve net zero by 2050. To reach net zero there will be a percentage of carbon that will have to be removed permanently from the atmosphere.
Johnny Thorsen, VP of partnerships at Spotnana said: “SAF can only remove approximately 80 per cent of emissions from air travel, and therefore can’t be the only strategy used to achieve net zero emissions goals.
“To achieve net zero impact, we believe it’s essential to provide access to carbon removal technology that is effective, accurate, and simple to use.”
Spotnana customers can choose to offset their travel programme carbon emissions as calculated by their preferred partner.
After an offset is purchased, a digital certificate is provided to
customers in the form of a blockchain-based token as proof of their
carbon emission removal, documenting the exact amount of carbon removed
along with a serial number for each transaction.
The certificate can be “attached” to the relevant period of time and
corresponding bookings, making it easy for travel programmes to
communicate results both internally and externally.
Daniel Moström, board chairman at Creturner Group said: “We are excited to partner with Spotnana to deliver a flexible, transparent, and digital way to meet their customer’s needs for true climate offsets.”
Moström added: “Unlike traditional forms of carbon offsets like tree planting, our approach is immediate, permanent, and clearly measurable.”
Spotnana has also committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions for its own travel programme and is using Spotnana Carbon Removal to offset carbon emissions created by Spotnana employees when they travel for business.
Thorsen added: “The reality is that we have already put too much carbon into our atmosphere, and avoidance won’t deliver the impact we need to protect our planet. We need to invest in scaling technologies that truly remove carbon and put it back in the ground.”
