Travel management company CWT is to enable clients to reduce their carbon emissions from flights by buying sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through a partnership with specialist platform Squake.
The global arrangement will allow CWT’s clients to purchase SAF from sustainable fuel supplier Neste through Squake’s automated CO2 Solution Suite platform, as well as creating certification for the use of the fuel.
Squake formed a partnership last year with Finland-based specialist Neste to boost SAF adoption in the business travel industry by allowing the sustainable fuel to be purchased through the Squake platform.
Richard Thompson, global head of ESG and employee experience at CWT, said: “SAF presents a highly promising pathway for decarbonising air travel, and so we've been looking closely at different solutions in this space to support our customers' sustainability goals.
“Squake has one of the most innovative products in the market, which will enable our clients to access Neste's world class sustainable aviation fuel as well as other impactful climate projects."
CWT’s participating clients will receive detailed information on their SAF purchases via Squake’s self-service management system.
The two companies also plan to raise awareness about sustainable travel initiatives, including supplying the latest insights on SAF to travel buyers, as well as information on other options such as carbon removal.
Philipp von Lamezan, CEO and co-founder of Squake, added: “This partnership realises the core purpose of our solution: connecting change and decision makers at scale to maximise and accelerate the sustainable transformation of the travel industry.”
SAF reduces carbon emissions from flights by up to 80 per cent compared with traditional aircraft fuel over the lifecycle of the sustainable fuel, which can be produced from a range of feedstocks such as used cooking oils, animal fat and biomass.
Susanne Bouma, head of programmes and partnerships at Neste’s Renewable Aviation business, said the partnership between CWT and Squake will make its SAF purchasing solution available to a “much wider audience”.
“This will enable a significant reduction of air travel emissions by using Neste's SAF as well as helping to drive the acceleration of SAF production and usage," she added.
Other TMCs have also been busy making SAF available for clients to buy as a way to reduce emissions: ATPI has just announced its own deal with Neste, while American Express Global Business Travel created the Avelia book-and-claim SAF programme in 2022 working alongside energy giant Shell and professional services company Accenture.
